Origivation Magazine Partners with Major Label Artist RES to Raise Money for Teens Program in West Philadelphia

December concert at World Café Live will benefit local charity, Caring People Alliance and their West Philadelphia Community Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania—November 5th , 2010 – Local Music Magazine Origivation has announced that it will kick off a new concert series to help raise money for Philadelphia charities starting with a benefit show featuring former Geffen and MCA recording artist RES. Origivation owner, Brian Cronin says “There are a lot of great organizations that are doing incredible work in this city and we want to help shine a light on that.” A portion of the proceeds of the first concert will go to benefit Caring People Alliance, a local nonprofit that operates the West Philadelphia Community Center and two other community centers in Philadelphia. The West Center is building a program that will focus on educational supports and anti-violence initiatives aimed directly at teens.

The event will take place Thursday, December 2nd, 2010 at 8:00 pm at the World Café Live located at 3025 Walnut Street. RES, a Philadelphia native, will play a 45-60 minute set featuring popular songs such as “They Say Vision” and “Golden Boys” as well as material from her new upcoming album RESET. When asked about the event, RES responded “I am from Philly, I was a Temple student and my father owns businesses in North Philly… I know what these streets can do so I want to give back”. RES’s set will last from 8:30 PM – 9:30 PM followed by Origivation showcase artists, Christy Jefferson, Quincy Mumford and Seve.

Ticket prices start at $15 in advance and $20 at the door for general admission. Additional packages that include promotional items and special seating are also available for purchase from the nonprofit. Advance tickets can be purchased online at the World Café Live website: www.worldcafelive.com.

Sometimes pictures say it all but I don't think you can tell by the pictures below... This was one of my most challenging show to date. I literally had NO voice the day before from a horrible throat infection! FYI To all singers out there always ask the sound man to clean the microphone w/alcohol!!! Anyways I went to one of the most amazing doctors a throat specialist named Dr. Kessler and he along with a tall order of meds got me back in shape. The setlist had about 23 songs on it....thanks to Kweli! :) Too say the least I thought Kweli was CRAZY for such a demanding setlist but we did it! And couldn't have done it any better!!! Shout out to everyone that was on stage with us! I love this band!!

who says that talent isn't hereditary? true certain talents can be learned over time, but when music is in someone’s blood it seems to follow the offspring as well. this is probably why sting’s daughter coco sumner is one of my favorite new artists that’s out right now.

performing under the name ‘i blame coco’ her first single “cesar” has an electronic-retro but very progressive feel about it. at only 19 years of age, she possesses a maturity and swagger with her sound that some artists past her senior couldn’t fuck with. Maybe being around her musical pops had something to do with it.

either way, she’s dope and I think you all should check her out too.

Why We Do It!

being an artist to today is totally different than being one ten years ago. there's pros and cons that are associated with technology. pros being that you can connect with fans directly and reach people that you have never had a chance to meet before, and cons being that everybody with a laptop that don't take the music seriously is going to try and put out a record getting in the way of artists that do have a passion.

that's one of the things that i realize is important with what we (artists) do: passion. if i was doing this just for some money or acclaim i would've stopped a long time ago. i do this because nothing makes me happier than to be able to write a song and then get on stage and perform it seeing you all in the crowd. there's nothing like it.

it's also great when you're feeling down and out and want to quit (or at least take a hiatus) and you find new reasons to be inspired. from fans, from other artists or even from listening to a song that always comfort me for years.

when the days get hard it should be a reminder of my calling and know that not everyone can do this. and further more, not everyone can do this well. the love and support that i get from you all let's me know that i got something and i'll never take it for granted.

now, i'm an indy artist and everything you get from me is touched by me ,personally. you order a cd? it's coming from my hands. you get a poster? it's my autograph. hell, the envelope has my writing on it. i'm giving you me so when you hear my music, you're not hearing a label rep telling me to say something. you're hearing my feelings and emotions.

my fans have been honest with me and so supportive that they deserve the same from me. okay, is that enough venting? i gotta go mail these cds off to the people that ordered them. life is good.

Bark for Hot Dogs!

I was in the taxi with Dan my guitar player thinking "what should we eat?"...and i thought about this hot dog spot in Brooklyn that i read about in a airplane magazine .Now listen I don't really eat hot dogs alot. I usually reserve hot dogs for just barbeques in the summertime. BUT please do yourself a favor and go to BARK in Park slope Brooklyn. Its the best spot for gourmet hotdogs. I am such a foodie its crazy.The best part of this place is that even though its a pretty basic meal, the ingredients that Bark uses are high quality and are very thought out. So it's not just your average ball park hot dog. Trust me and go for yourself and try te bacon and cheese hot dog and ginger ale! And if you are a vegan they got veggie dogs too!

Black Girls Rock

With her latest album, Black Girls Rock, Res shows that the title is true for so many reasons. First entering the music scene in 2001 with her debut album How I Do, Res has made a name for herself as an eclectic artist—combining soul, rock and everything in between.

Today, as a member of Idle Warship along with Talib Kweli and Graph Nobel—Res is moving crowds with her signature sound infused with some hip-hop—gaining more and more fans, but keeping her same fan base. Here is an exclusive interview with Res, make sure you join her mailing list for exclusive information here, as well.

Bella: you have such a diverse sound—growing up, which artist did you listen to?

Res: Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Intruders, Billy Idol, Lena Horne, A Tribe Called Quest, NWA, and some Broadway tunes.

Bella: What’s so refreshing about your music is how you mix genres—between Rock and R&B, I know at a point, a lot of what was on the radio was respectively one dimensional—how important was it for you to have your music reflect the music that you liked?

Res: It was more natural to have the music I sing reflect me than important. We didn’t think that hard—we just did it. We produced what we thought sounded right and still do.

Bella: And with that being said the mixing of genres— some people are still somewhat naïve to. I remember seeing your video for “Golden Boys,” on VH1 soul from your first album, and was completely drawn in because it was so different from like the Destiny’s Child music that was being played on the radio consistently. With that being said, what did the experience with the record sales and the process in general teach you about the music business?

Res: Well it taught me that record execs, listen to music differently than everyone else on the planet. Having a great album—doesn’t mean anything unless you have a great team behind you and tough skin.

Bella: Deep. Santigold, helped write some songs on your debut album; how is your relationship with her now, and how does it feel to be writing and singing more of your own material now?

Res: our relationship is great and writing songs is very cool—but stressful at times.

Bella; You were an artist on the now defunct MCA, and you were later picked up by Geffen Records who houses artist like Mary J. Blige, and Solange Knowles, what inspired you to leave the label?

Res: For the record, Solange is not apart of that label anymore—but they simply were lagging on releasing my music and I didn’t want to wait anymore. I knew that I was taking a step back, but believed it would be better in the long run. It was after I left that I traveled the world with Gnarls Barkley supporting Cee-Lo on backing vocals for their huge debut album, “St. Elsewhere.”

Bella: Jump to now, you’re a member of Idle Warship, with probably one of my favorite emcees of all time—Talib Kweli, how’d this collaboration come together?

Res: Idle Warship is a duo with Talib and myself, and it started because of two things. First, Kweli had an idea to do Res and Kweli mixtape and two from me wanting an easy way to perform without a band.

Bella: I’ve seen you guys live, and I play “Party Robot” all the time—“Bedroom Lites” is my favorite. How difficult or easy do you find it to be to stay truthful to your soul, while incorporating the other artist?

Res: It’s easy because I have always blended genres in my music. Idle Warship is just the “club version,” in a sense—very upbeat, I love it. It’s a great outlet.

Bella: Then to your latest album, “Black Girls Rock,” which is such an empowering title, especially to me being a black girl myself, what do you think it’s about us that makes us rock?

Res: What makes black girls rock is that no matter what, we always pull through and get the job done, and we have big hearts made of gold.

Bella: This album has some any good songs, like “Bittersweet,” and like “For Who You Are,” what inspired this album writing wise- as well as what made you want to make it a free album instead of a album for purchase?

Res: the writing was totally inspired by my ex-boyfriend, and the things I was going through, “For Who You Are,” hits home. I made it free because music is free!

Bella: How do you believe that music has evolved since your debut, and how do you hope your fans will get from this evolution?

Res: I think my music has evolved a lot and people more than ever, want to be experimental outside the lines—and find it more cool to be different and exciting and unpredictable.

Bella: What music are you listening to today?

Res: Marvin Gaye’s “Vulnerable.” KT Tunstell, Courtney Love’s “Hole.” Faith Evans first album, and loads of 80’s classics.

Bella: Lastly, not only have you made a name for yourself as a musician, but you’ve made a name for yourself as a fashionista. I know when I came to see you and Idle Warship at the Fillmore in San Francisco, a lot of us were saying how pretty you looked, and how your hair was so cute, what would you describe your style as, and what’s one tip you could give to anyone fashion wise?

Res: My style is always changing to the point where I am not recognized amongst people I know who I haven’t seen in a while. It’s really funny to me. I love all sorts of clothes and my mood changes and I just try to match my mood with my clothes. Sometimes I feel very feminine, and then sometimes, I like to dress like a tomboy. The one tip I would give is, dress how you feel and be comfortable. If your friends make fun of you, then dump your friends, they are making what you wear more important then who you are.

This non-proﬁt organization brings music and artistry together at dakota Lounge in

Santa Monica on March 6th to raise money for women and babies in earthquake-

ravaged Jacmel, Haiti.

The event takes place on March 6th at Dakota Lounge, a Santa Monica nightspot known

as a live music venue that brings people of all musical tastes and backgrounds together.

To date, m.a.m.a. e a r t h has raised funds for Nourish the Children, Shine on Sierra Leone

and Volunteers of America. Come enjoy the show, get inspired and have some fun, all

Her name is Res.

No, she is not an up and coming artist. This well established rockstar has had a slew of undying fans for almost a decade (myself included) and many are waiting for her to get the spotlight she deserves. For others, the first they heard of her may have been through her group with Talib Kweli, Idle Warship. I recently got a chance to catch up with the woman who showed that BLACK GIRLS ROCK!!

Now personally, i love music that either fits into many genres, or none at all, and your music is just that to me. How would you describe your music?

When did you start singing?

WHEN I WAS 8YRS OLD, ALTHOUGH MY MOM SWEARS SHE HEARD ME IN HER BELLY.

Your debut album came out with Golden Boys, one of my alltime favorite tracks. Was this the first album you made, signed or unsigned?

YES, MY FIRST DEMO'S MADE UP 4 SONGS ON THE ALBUM. IVE KNOWN THE GARDEN, THE HUSTLER, SITTING BACK AND TSUNAMI WERE ON MY FIRST DEMO TAPE.

Tell us about the collabo with Talib Kweli. How did that come about? Are you guys still in Idle Warship together?

YES WE ARE IDLE WARSHIP. IT CAME FROM ME WANTING TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT AND WANTING TO ROCK SOME PARTY SONGS.

You recently released Black.Girls. Rock! Tell us about the album. Favorite Track on there?

ITS VERY PERSONAL, VERY ME IN THE MOMENT, AND THE PAST. FOR WHO YOU ARE IS MY FAVORITE SONG, MUSIC AND RECORDING EXPERIENCE.

I wanted you guys to see what I see when i'm in the booth...Pictures of Obama,Bilal, Vivian Green and myself are in the booth keeping everyone company.The collage on the outside of the booth was done by Bilal and his producer Steve Mckie...Hey did you know Bilal is gearing up to release a new album? Yup it's the truth! And the Colt 45 sign is real and an original.lol The records that are lining the walls are as classic as the songs that are made in this place! There are loads of drums and an AMAZING sounding drum kit set up by Steve(who is pictures in one of the shots...kinda blurry), cause he plays the drums and produces for Bilal and I was lucky enough to work with him on a record called "God Bless My Soul".

Philadelphia is the birth home of classically trained vocalist RES, who signed to MCA Records in 1999, and got christened to the urban world with her vocals dipping on albums by GZA plus Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek, followed by later work with Nas and Madlib.

She attended an all-girls catholic school and was prematurely submerged into classical music, mastering opera and performing Italian arias by the age of 14. If we are to remember RES for her solo debut 'How I Do', 'Golden Boys' was the track to drum her onto the scene back in 2001, intertwining folk, acoustic rock with hip hop and soul. She survived the death of MCA and was adopted by Geffen Records, but later dropped the label after finding herself shelved to be forgotten. This now brings us to her 2010 innovations. One: Idle Warship is the identity to her duo group with Talib himself, plus Two: her indie comeback sophomore album Black.Girls.Rock.

'Reflection Eternal' by Talib & Hi-Tek must be one of the most rated hip hop albums and collaboration projects of all time. Do you feel this project enriched &/or chose your current direction? Why?

I love what Talib and Hi-Tek do together. They have a chemistry that’s just crazy! They were on of the first groups that collaborated with me, early in my career. I truly believe that all the work I’ve done in my career as well as all the music that I ever listen to have influenced my life as well as the direction of music I go into for the future. I am what I experience.

Describe the topics of the Black.Girls.Rock albumin six words.

Brave, personal, honest, rare, real music.

Since 1999, Talib has featured you on multiple projects. How did the Idle Warship concept come about and would you say the group’s sound roots more from your vision than his? Is Idle Warship an independent concept or a major label driven idea?

The concept for the album came about because of what was going on around us at the time of its inception. We wrote a story about a girl from a small town who wants to be “everything she sees on TV”. It’s a fictional story based on real life. Idle Warship is very much an independent concept; Kweli and I are hands on as you can get from making the album, to booking shows as well as our web presence.

How hard is it to be a female artist, in such a male-driven industry? What aspects do you avoid or overcome?

It’s no harder than being a woman in a Fortune 500 company! In other words, it’s extremely hard, to say the least. Let me put it like this, not too many men like having a woman boss in any career. So I deal with a lot of insecurities as well as the labels that strong women get attached to. On the other hand, as a woman it makes me stronger than my male counterpart and at times it is recognized and rewarded.

How did you feel about Geffen picking and holding you and the other selected artists from the late MCA as trophies, and then, not pushing your music? Did you see other former MCA names come forward, and you be put back? Or was the whole transition from label to label an empty promise?

I don’t think it’s fair to have a contract with anyone and not do your end of the bargain, which happens a lot, but it’s part of business and no matter what I know, nothing is guaranteed. I did see some artists come, record an album and release as well as other artists’ record and get let go. The transition for me was not completely an empty promise, I did record an album and mix it and master it, but it was not released. Although I would have loved for Geffen to put that album out and support it like MCA did my debut, I feel that was my destiny and I’m not bitter towards them or anyone else. I learned a valuable lesson and made great music.

You commenced in the industry when music still sold CD albums. Do you appreciate music now being so widely available to stream and download? Or do you miss the days of unwrapping packaging and Discmans? Why?

I definitely miss the days of music being sold in record store. It’s sad to walk by a store that sells what you make and, to see that it’s closing down, without plans of ever re-opening. At the same time, I do like the idea of having my music available to so many at the click of a button. It’s a double-edge sword.

What artists old and new do you listen to on a daily basis?

Cocteau Twins, Marvin Gaye, Talib Kweli, KT Tunstall, Ab Liva, Sade.

Other than music, what are your passions?

Photography, travelling, tennis and my family.

Would you ever go back to your opera days for good?

No. The classical training I received taught me how to sing properly without damaging my voice. It also taught me discipline and pronunciation when singing.

I love classical music and I haven’t thought about doing it professionally ever. I believe I’m right where I’m supposed to be at the moment.

Your sounds broadly range. If you were to be put in one category, what would you choose rock or hip-hop? Why?

I would choose alternative R&B, because when I listen to what I do, that’s what I think it sounds like, but I don’t mind being labelled anything. The label determines what music I make and never will.

Can Europe expect a RES visit/ show soon?

I am working on gaining contacts overseas, so I can perform and showcase what I do. I love to travel and have been to Europe many times, now it’s time to not just sightsee but to perform.

Sometimes timing is everything. When I was first introduced to Res and her debut single “Golden Boys,” I instantly fell in love with a woman’s whose musical sound mirrored mine. Even though she may have a soul and Hip Hop influence, she also has some Pink Floyd or a copy of Sketches of Spain on vinyl. But maybe the rest of the musical world (or her label not knowing how to market such an eclectic artist) dropped the ball, and so her sophomore project Black.Girls.Rock! took a back seat.

Even though this album has been in an incubator for a few years, the music can be released in the musical climate now and still be a force to be reckoned with. Now, with so many alternative sounding acts (including Gnarls Barkley, a band in which she does back-up for), the public maybe ready for Res… again.

The album begins with “On My Way,” a rock-soul hybrid of Res talking about something that we all have issues with: the radio. There’s an honesty in the music that is apparent and appealing. Other moments of her intimate story telling are shown on songs like “Sunday Nite” and “Angry” has me wondering why she isn’t featured on Billboard’s Top 100.

Sonically the album has more moments of acoustic-rock than soulful backdrops (which her debut had more of). Either way, the material is still well-produced and enough variety to keep the fans she has, and able to attract ones that aren’t familiar with her. Hopefully the resurfacing of this project will be a calling to major labels with gems like this sitting in the vaults (i.e. J*Davey) and encourage them to give them to the people. Trust, they are waiting.

To some Res is one of the best singer songwriters in Modern R&B. To others, she’s not yet a household name. However, to a small group of fans in Washington, DC last week, Res was the center of the world.

Fans packed the Langston room of Busboys and Poets to hear an acoustic performance and a Q&A with DC’s DJ Stylus Inside the Artists’ Studio, modeled after actors’ show on Bravo, sold out quickly, and the finale in the series was one of the best yet.

The setting was an intimate stage: Res starts off timid and slightly nervous but instantly gains control of the crowd. She’s almost shocked when people know her songs. The setlist included a mix of tracks from her classic How I Do, and her latest, Black Girls Rock. Her latest, seem more personal and focused than her previous efforts: Res took the guitar to play a song, Let You Go on a left handed guitar. “I’m too cute to cry all day, ” the lyrics go, “I wish you weren’t such a fucking waste of time.”

In several songs Res rails against the industry that never was comfortable with her. On the Idle Warship track “LA Famous,” she talks about her frustrations with the handling of her image and the lack of promotion for her album.
And that was the bulk of her post performance discussion. Why did she not get the play that other stars received?

Discovered by Hank Shocklee, Res was on a world-wind path to stardom. The favorite in backrooms of the record label, her album, How I Do was greenlit and funded. Unfortunately, being a multi-dimensional Black woman causes issues for the label. “I’m a buffet type of chick,” she says about her music. “They didn’t know what department it should be marketed to.”

The discussion was intimate and candid. In response to a question about Nas’ verse on the track “Ice King she says “I didn’t like what he did” to gasps in the audience “but truthfully everything ain’t for me to like”. She then goes on to tell the story about how she nervously approached him at Baja Fresh in LA. Came to the first show in LA.

Her Second album was never released, and was mirred in label drama. Frustrated, Res asked to leave and never got another deal. But don’t fret–the past 8 years Res has been living life, traveling the world and living on the beach in LA. However, due to public demand, she decided to release her latest album, the free Black Girls Rock.

All in all, Inside the Artists’ Studio was a great way for fans to connect with their favorite artist on a more personal level. At the end of the night, Res and Stylus took questions from the audience. “I personally believe people are ready to see Black people do different shit,” she says in response to one question, and its true.A few questions and several marriage proposals later, I can say that everybody in the room that night was ready for some “different shit.” Are you?

Res Creative Toys...

I was sitting in my room, looking around and thought I'd show you some of my toys that keep me creative and happy..My very first guitar was a right handed acoustic guitar, that I bought off of 45 Street at one of those music stores. And YES! I got totally ripped off! lol First of all I bought a RIGHT-HANDED guitar...but I'm left handed! The guy at the store convinced me that it would be easier for me to just learn right handed and i would have less problems getting guitars and lessons etc!!! WRONG!!!! Fast forward, I went back to the Paramount Hotel and leaned the guitar against something ,it slid and literally broke to pieces, 4 days later!

So then a year later, my manager at the time,brought me a left-handed Baby Taylor Acoustic! Now THAT, was a great investment and I suggest if you are learning to play, buy one of those. Its not only cute but it's easy to play, sounds great and if you travel as much as I do or less...it fits in the overhead compartment of all airplanes!!! Even the small commuter planes! I would show a picture of mine but, i left it at the studio.

Then I moved to LA met Wah Wah Watson and he has always been, one of my guitar gods and now a big brother. I wanted an electric guitar and was thinking all about "how cool I would look with this color guitar etc" instead of the "feel" of the guitar. I ran out to guitar center on sunset and picked the only left handed shiny red Fender they had in stock, under 250 bucks and couldn't WAIT to show WahWah! When I first told him I was going to buy a guitar he told me "Res, take your time and wait a minute,just look around first" but I didn't. So i went to his house and he took one look at the guitar and said "Take that shit back!" and he laughed at me! He picked up his Fender and said "Feel this..." His guitar felt AMAZING in my hands, I didn't want to give it back! Then he said "Pick your shit up" and my guitar felt like a block of wood. It's all about the right guitar not the prettiest.

Then Wah Wah called his friend Taye Uhler, a fellow left handed guitar player and Taye took me to True Tone's in Santa Monica and I got MY guitar. My first electric guitar was a Burns Brian May...what's so special about this guitar is that it has these cool switches on it, so i can change the sound of the pick-ups. There are 3 settings. 1 setting makes the guitar sound like a Les Paul, the other setting give me a Stratocaster sound and the other is a Telecaster sound....

I also picked up a full size Ovation Acoustic just for a full size sound and a Mini low-end model youth size bass for fun! Shoutout to Chase and amazing artist from Paris but residing in LA, who came thru and spray painted my case! I will never sell these guitars too many great memories attached..

It seems like I have the strangest , but the BEST luck, when it comes to seeing art exhibits. I was the very last person to walk into The King Tut Exhibit in Los Angeles a few years back and this year , I saw the Barkley L. Hendricks' Exbihit BIRTH of the COOL, on the last day of exhibition!

For the last few months, I drove down Broad Street, for all sorts of reasons and I would glance over,while stopped at the traffic light and notice the words BIRTH of the COOL and a figure of a life size black man dressed in 1970's 'fly attire". This would get my attention because it reminded me of my mother and father and all their friends!

When I jotted down his name and google "Rebirth of the Cool Broad Street"

I was pleasantly surprised. This would be the moment I discovered Barkley L. Hendricks!

Who is Barkley L. Hendricks? He is an amazing painter who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia and at an early age ,around 17 or 18 years old , started to paint life size portraits of African -Americans in an unique, provocative but brilliant way. He made the everyday person of the 1970's seem like royalty with colors, posture and his artistic approach. The way he captured facial expressions and dress is incredible. If you have the chance to see his work in person its inspiring and breathtaking all at the same time. And lastly it made me proud, to see someone paint people that are very familiar to my growing up and life in such a regal way. Which is the way I see them.The people he painted are my mother, my father, their friends, my family and people i've grown up with in North Philly while working in our family's corner store establishment. No I do not know any of his subjects prsonally but in one a sense or another I know someone who hey represent very very well.

This exhibit was so inspiring to me. It not only opened my eye to more art but it also prompted me to enroll in the University of the Arts Digital Photography Program.

And learn the art of digital photography, so I can document the people around me and present them in a regal, larger than life sort of way.

Get inspired by any means necessary!

More Music and Ear Candy...

So I teamed up with Nicole 1/2 of the lovely Nina Sky to create A Box Of Chocolates...some ear candy for all u!
It's fun for me to collaborate with different producers cause "you never know what your gonna get" when two creative people collide.
Collabo's always brings out another side of artists, a side that isn't always excepted by their fan base but it full fills an artist need to be creative without any restraints or rules.So Iin the recent past i have collaborated with all types of producers, some famous some of whom i've met on the street who are still very underground,and some who produce music in a genre i have yet tried out.
A friend of mine,name Kathy suggested i work with Nicole and it was a genius idea! I was unaware at the time that Nicole has been DJ-ing since she was ten years old(pre Serato days). She is more than qualified and official....
So in a few weeks we will be dropping this thang and i know you are gonna love it!
Its called A Box of Chocolates and its very sweet!

This is an incredible song! I heard it first on a movie soundtrack and fell in LOVE!
Dave, a great producer and vocal arranger from Harlem,NYC produced the music and on a random day in NYC at his apartment we
created this song! That day i was super hoarsed and i wasn't sure how it would come out but the raspy voice added to the drama of the song and the emotion that poured out was perfect. Its one of my favorites...please pass it on...the world needs to hear this one!

Oh let me explain the picture! I was in Venice ,Italy walking around taking photos and this one was taken right after i was in the first Guggenheim Museum. I found myself on a lonely street and there was only me and him there in the distance. If you zoom in on this picture ....it is something to see! So sit back, listen to the tune and view the picture and lets go to Venice Italy for a bit!lol

Artist to Watch: Tom McKinney

My father had a friend named Tom McKinney. I have no idea how they met but I just remember this black guy , in his mid-twenies early thirty's , came over to my house in the middle of the summer one afternoon. He seemed nice but he wasn't like the other adults that my dad was friends with...My Dad was a hustler so I was used to 1970's gangster types, street guys,...Tom wasn't that.He was soft spoken and detailed oriented and creative. Anyways, he came to my house and took snap shots of my sister, my brother , my mom and I and just left. When I later asked who he was, my Mom said "Oh that's Tom McKinney, your father's friend who painted most of the painting in our house!"
He was the first artist I ever met! My house had over 100 paintings in it. Some paintings were hung up some just stacked up around the house on the floor.
They were of black children playing, old men sitting on a porch playing checkers,one painting was of Ghandi and also he painted a portrait of my father!
Looking back on things I realized that although my parents weren't highly educated , they were my first teachers beyond teaching me manners and morals but they exposed me to art, black art.They exposed me to music too! I basically grew up in a museum. My father passed away February 10,2008 and he left all those paintings that were hung or lying around my house as a kid to me and my brother and sister.Some of them hang in my brothers house and my mom's but most are still in storage until I own my own home.
You should take the time to google Tom McKinney, he is still alive and doing well!
A few months ago I went to spend time with Hill Harper at his Los Angeles home and notice that he owns a painting of Tom's. Its a small world.
